NT:Man dead in Darwin van explosion

DARWIN, Dec 16 AAP - A man died when his van exploded in the driveway of a house at Darwin.

The van exploded at Parap at 6.30am (CST) on Friday, causing damage to the nearby house,
a police spokeswoman said.

Police were initially unable to confirm what may have caused the accident, although
there are reports it was caused by a gas bottle.

One man is dead and several other people were being treated for shock, police said.

The scene was declared safe about 9am (CST), with police, firies and paramedics at the scene.

It was initially unclear if the victim, who has yet to be formally identified, was
in the van at the time of the explosion.

It comes just days after a Melbourne plumber died when his van loaded with gas cylinders
exploded.

The 25-year-old tradie was about to leave for work when the van exploded, blasting
debris into nearby homes.
