Net more vulnerable than ever

Spending on Internet security continues to grow, yet theworldwide supernetwork remains more vulnerable than ever to viruses,break-ins and terrorism.

Simply put, hackers are getting smarter, and computer networksare getting more complex and difficult to keep safe.

* Spendy spam: The volume of unwanted messages -- commonly knownas spam -- has become a pariah for parents, a costly burden forInternet service providers and a general nuisance for everyone else.

Last year, the European Union released a study estimating theworldwide cost of spam at about $8 billion annually. The study alsofound that the average worker spends 10 minutes a day sortingthrough unwanted solicitations.

Research firm Jupiter Media Metrix reported that Internet users received an average of 1,470 junk messages in 2001, and they canexpect about 3,800 annually in five years.
