Fed: Tackling addictions needs New Year's resolution

SYDNEY, Dec 31 AAP - The new year was the perfect time to turn over a new leaf andtackle drug, alcohol and gambling problems, a leading addiction counsellor said today.

The festive season was a time when people with addictions tended to isolate themselvesfrom family and friends, James Pitts, head of the rehabilitation centre, Odyssey House, said.

"They traditionally become very depressed, very down and start to think about the contentof their lives," Mr Pitts said.

"All of us look at the new year as a new beginning, a time when you can wipe the slate clean.

"It's certainly appropriate for those people who are suffering the adverse effectsof their drug, alcohol or gambling problems to do the same thing."

Mr Pitts said many people overindulged in drugs or alcohol at Christmas to distancethemselves from painful memories.

"Once you get into that end of the spectrum, the problems don't go away," he said.

He urged anyone struggling to control their drug or alcohol use or gambling to seek help.

"It doesn't hurt to just talk to somebody, it doesn't mean that anybody is going tojudge them or castigate them ... they just may be able to give a different perspectivethat may be of assistance," he said.
