NSW: Boy dies and mother survives fall into river

SYDNEY, April 1 AAP - A four-year-old boy drowned in a fall into a Sydney river whichhis mother survived, police said today.

NSW Marine Police are investigating the incident.

The child died in the Parramatta River at Meadowbank Wharf, in Sydney's west, last night.

Police and ambulance crews were called after Sydney Ferry staff pulled the boy andhis 32-year-old mother from the water about 8pm (AEST).

Ambulance staff performed CPR on the pair before taking them to Concord Hospital.

Medical staff could not revive the child, but his mother survived and was today undergoingpsychiatric assessment.

Police are yet to locate the boy's other immediate family in Sydney, and his name hasnot been released.
