Two American favorites are twinned in new exhibitions at Atlanta's High Museum of Art _ "A Matter of Time: Edward Hopper From the Whitney Museum of American Art" and "Ansel Adams and His Legacy."

Centering around his 1930 masterpiece, "Early Sunday Morning," the Hopper show is small _ 10 oil paintings and 6 water colors _ but features some of his best work, including "Foreshore _ Two Lights," the watercolor he considered his best. All are drawn from the Whitney's extensive Hopper collection _ the world's largest.

The Adams show also concentrates on classic, iconic images, but examines how the great landscape photographer reinterpreted some of his famous pictures through the printing process.

There are three prints of his 1941 "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico," a gigantic mural-size one among them.

The new Ogden Museum of Southern Art celebrated its grand opening recently in New Orleans with a very grand exhibition called "The Story of the South: Art and Culture 1890-2003" _ an examination of the region's legacies, traditions, history and culture through the works of a wide-ranging selection of regional artists and photographers.

These include such notables as Ernest J. Bellocq, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dusti Bonge', Walker Evans, Clarence John Laughlin, Lulu King Saxon, Kendall Shaw, Jack Spencer and, yes, author Eudora Welty. The show, on view indefinitely, follows Southern life from its agrarian roots through World War I, the Jazz Age, the Great Depression, the Civil Rights era and modern times.
